Recovery is not the same as stopping
Recovery is not the same as stopping
It is easy to assume that recovery means doing less.
Stopping. Sitting down. Taking a break.
Sometimes that helps.
But it is not the full picture.
What recovery really means
Recovery is not simply the absence of activity.
It is the restoration of capacity.
And that depends on more than just stopping.
The conditions for recovery
Capacity rebuilds when the conditions are right.
That includes:
- good quality sleep
- a settled nervous system
- a sense of safety
- the ability to switch off mentally
Without these, stopping activity does not fully restore capacity.
Why people feel stuck
This is why people can rest and still feel tired.
They have reduced activity.
But the system has not shifted into recovery.
The underlying conditions are unchanged.
A more useful approach
When you understand this, recovery becomes more specific.
It is not just about doing less.
It is about creating the conditions where capacity can return.
